one of the most ecologically significant wetlands in the Philippines. Found in the heart of Mindanao's Agusan Basin, this vast expanse of marsh covers an area roughly the size of Metro Manila. It contains nearly 15% of the nation's fresh water resources in the form of swamp forests.

The tiny community of mostly ethnic Manobos have made their permanent homes deep within the marsh, living on floating homes. The small houses made of bamboo and nipa lashed to hard wood logs, freely rise or fall with the level of the marsh itself. The marsh provides virtually everything the Manobos need.

Kaliwa and Chico Dams: More than just debt of money

The Chico River loan agreement may prove to be a template for future loan agreements that the Philippines enters into, effectively compromising our patrimonial assets.
Because these two projects are bad from an environmental and social justice point of view, likely resulting in an intensified insurgency in the Sierra Madre and Cordillera, they are likely not to be built and the probability is that future administrations will have to cancel these loans. These, in turn, will result in defaulting on the loans and in arbitration proceedings that have been designed to favor China.

Road to damnation through Chinese-funded dams

We predict that future administrations will have to cancel the Kaliwa and Chico projects and default on the Chinese loans, which will result in the Philippines being sued by China in arbitration proceedings that have been designed to favor the creditor

Britania Islands, breathtaking paradise in Surigao del Sur
by/Henrylito D. Tacio Jan 17, 2015

A group of beautiful, untouched islands is Surigao del Sur's best-kept secret, specifically in the municipality of San Agustin
San Agustin is blessed with 24 islands and islets scattered all over Lianga Bay, which faces the Pacific Ocean. The group of islands is called Britania, named after its barangay.

Britania, an ancient term for Roman Britain, is actually a Latin name derived from the Greek form “Prettanike” or “Brettaniai,” which means “a collection of islands with individual names.”

Most of the islands are uninhabited with minimal or no vegetation. But all have one thing in common: they are surrounded with crystal clear waters.

Ifugao Rice Terraces may be younger than we think
by/Pia Ranada Apr 29, 2015
Far from pre-dating Spanish colonization, the iconic rice terraces may be just as old as some colonial-period churches, a team of archaeologists find. A team of scientists are set to present new findings that peg the age of the iconic rice terraces at 300 or 400 years instead of the long-assumed age of 2,000 years.

In 2001, the United Nations put the rice terraces in its list of endangered World Heritage sites. Efforts of the community, government, and private sector led to its removal from the list in 2012.
