Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (National Living Treasures)
Sep 9, 2015

As a group, these folk and traditional artists reflect the diverse heritage and cultural traditions that transcend their beginnings to become part of our national character. As Filipinos, they bring age-old customs, crafts and ways of living to the attention and appreciation of Filipino life. They provide us with a vision of ourselves and of our nation, a vision we might be able to realize someday, once we are given the opportunity to be true to ourselves as these artists have remained truthful to their art.

They are our National Living Treasures.

How non-timber forest products preserve living traditions in the Philippines
Mavic Conde August 04, 2019

Through the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ School of Living Traditions, a cultural master teaches the skills and techniques of doing a traditional art or craft.
It takes mental precision to create intricate hand-woven patterns. To consistently do that is amazing.
Indeed, from hinabol of Higaonons in Bukidnon, tingkep of Pala’wan in Palawan, and monom of Teduray in Maguindanao, among other hand-woven crafts in the Philippines come with detailed designs that depict mastery of skill and patience with the unhurried way of life.
However with modern challenges, these artisanal traditions may disappear.

Why do we call balikbayans "mayabang"? Even before they say a word, the difference in their attire, mannerisms, or speech suddenly brands balikbayans as boastful. You came home one day after a few years of living abroad. After the welcome hugs came the comments of who you've become now that you're back from another land.
Overseas Pinoys help when they can, but being abroad where there may be better opportunities does not mean there are no financial struggles. Wearing different clothes or having a different outlook does not make OFWs mayabang (braggart) or hindi na maabot (unreachable). Not raining money on everyone does not make them madamot (selfish).

.....Think of other than yourself.....

We have been married for 30 years and having a "network" of foreigner-filipino couples, so we think, we have a good knowledge, so:

First thoughts - advices for both of you before start of dating:

  • FIRST of ALL - IF you are a foreigner, visit Philippines OUTSIDE the tourist places, learn about the life & culture in small cities, municipalities and barangays BEFORE you start a dating, and if you can´t speak ENGLISH, so FORGET everything about dating. Only very very few filipinos can speake more than their own language and English.

  • NEXT - You the foreigner: What do you know about how the rules are for getting an immigrant visa to your fiancee - spouse to your country? Many countries have very special rules, and it can be very difficult to get...... There can be many denials for getting a visa.....Control all the rules in your country before you start a dating - e.g. it´s nearly impossible to get a foreign spouse to live with you in DENMARK!

  • IMPORTANT: Take care not to avoid falling victim to a “Catfish” or a "Romance Scams" Look more about that below HERE

  • Think about Long Distance Relationship and The Do's and Don'ts on how to survive a Long Distance Relationship

  • Marrying some-one who does not share the same culture with you and grew up with different background in all manners, then it is quite a challenge.

  • IMPORTANT: Take care not to avoid falling victim to "Drug syndicates" who use social media for recruitment. Members of these syndicates befriend vulnerable victims they meet via the Internet and even offer marriage proposals to seal the relationship. Look HERE

  • Sexuality in Philippines can be much different to sexuality in other countries .... virgin ....

  • What about Children LEFT-BEHIND?

  • How will your families and local societies accept mixed-blood-color children? Think e.g. about the problems for many Amerasians

  • NEXT, don´t think of dating a married person, that will only give problems read about divorce HERE

Thoughts about disabilities:

  • Think of what kind of problems it will be - give for a relationship, where one or maybe both of you have disabilities of many different kinds, which need a lot of money and maybe do, that you can´t travel??? Look more HERE In most situations, we can´t recommend a dating from a foreigner with disabilities to a filipina, that´s words from our hearts, because many filipina nearly try to run away from poverty, and maybe your girlfriend had hope to get a better life in your country, but would that be possible – better in a situation with maybe a foreigner's hard disability - OR -  maybe – even you - the foreigner - have known her for long time over cyberspace – she know very well that a relationship is impossible, so maybe she just try to use you for getting support….. SCAMS

Thoughts about Why:

  • WHY are you doing it?

  • WHY is the Filipino looking for a spouse abroad? Is she or he knowing anything about the comming foreign country, nature, climate, culture, language etc., OR -- try to read "Flee from Poverty" HERE and Poverty in the Philippines.

SO you - The Filipina - Filipino - HAVE TO MAKE UP  your mind about these:

  • If you are a Filipino - Filipina, so learn so much as possible about the comming country and the life there, best of all if it´s possible, so visit the country, speake with other filipino - filipina in that country and hear from them about the life, religions, laws, climate and ACCEPT of filipinos both in the country and the local area - community, where you maybe will come to live. Take care of countries with "SHARIA LAW"......... NEVER NEVER accept a spouse living after "SHARIA LAW" if you want a life with the HUMAN RIGHTS!

  • Do you know, what Muslims believe about insurance? IMPORTANT - WARNING! Read HERE

  • Don´t date a DANE, because it´s nearly impossible to get a foreign spouse comming from outside DENMARK to live with DANE in DENMARK!

  • The nature - climate - life - culture - language are maybe MUCH different in the new country, even the "sign of letters" MUCH different.

  • Every Filipina should ask a potential Foreign Pen Pal these questions before agreeing dating with reference to a later marriage & answer these questions to HER from Him. Look the "Questions to HIM and HER" HERE

  • What do you know about be a Balikbayan?

  • What do you know about the religion of the comming spouse

  • What do you know about "Violence and Discrimination Affecting Migrant Women and Girls" IMPORTANT: Look and read above "factsheet"

SO you - The foreigner - HAVE TO MAKE UP  your mind about these:

Are you dating for getting SEX? Forget it and find that from your own people and don´t destroy a filipino, who trusted you and hoped for a future!

  • Take care of Romance scams - Marriage scams - via the internet. These are the most common internet fraud types in the Philippines. Look more HERE

  • What do you know about the culture and the different in culture from province to province and language from island to island in Philippines?

  • What do you know about the religion the catholic of the comming filipina spouse

  • What do you know about the many tribes in the Philippines, their tradtions and rituals, if you find a partner in one of these?

  • What do you know about Sexuality in the Philippines?

  • Every Filipina should ask a potential Foreign Pen Pal these questions before agreeing dating with reference to a later marriage & answer these questions to HER from Him. Look the "Questions to HIM and HER" HERE

  • IMPORTANT - WARNING! Think of the areas with Terrorism & Terrorgroups - Don´t risk to be a part of that because of a "comming family circle"

  • Think about LEGAL age........Don´t make a Child Marriage....and putting lives at risk!!!!!!

  • Think about and READ the Philippine law "Deportation of Aliens"

  • What do you know about the history of the Philippines?

  • What do you know about family codes & life and traditions in Philippines?

  • Remember that more than 90% of filipinos are Catholics

  • Remember that divorce is not legal in the Philippines, so if....but read about it HERE

  • What do you know about DOs & DONTs in Dating in the Philippines?

  • What do you know about Etiquette in the Philippines?

  • The nature - climate - life - culture - language are maybe MUCH different in your country, even the "sign of letters" MUCH different.

  • What´s the law - rules for residence permission in your country for a comming spouse? Some countries have very strong rules, so control the rules in your country, BEFORE you start a dating!

  • What´s the rules for getting family from Philippines visiting your country?

  • How often will it be possible to go home and visit the family in Philippines - that´s expensive (think of how often you have contact with your family in your country)

  • Marriage for a Filipino means much more, than it does for many foreigners - divorce is not accepted

  • What about adoption of child - children, if the comming spouse already have child - children?

  • What about child - children Left-Behind?

  • If the marriage don´t work, what´s so the situation for the Filipino, what about the residence permission?

  • What about children - maybe adopted, who have got new citizenship - , if the Filipino have to leave your country?

  • Remember, that many countries don´t accept "Dual Citizenship". Are the filipino maybe ready to get only a new citizenship?

  • How will a Filipino be accepted in your family.....Have a serious talk with your family

  • How will your local community react?

  • Are you ready to help with BIG support for the family home in Philippines? So many families need to get support from children living abroad.

  • Maybe the filipino just try to use you - marry you for getting support to the family home AND NOT because of "LOVE to YOU". Many filipina nearly try to run away from the poverty for getting help to the family home.

Thoughts for both of you about Languages - Religion & rituals of Dead, Funeral, Burial etc.:

  • What about the languages in your family after marriage? Try to think..........

  • Maybe the language have quite different "letters" so you don´t understand a word of a written text, and maybe have to sign, a document you don´t understand.... maybe even have to be read in the "wrong" direction.. TAKE CARE of THAT, don´t sign anything, you don´t understand 100 % in your own language.

  • What about religion if you don´t belong to the same, which one will you accept for maybe comming children? What about the Filipino’s wishes?

  • Would you (and your family) accept a spouse practising another religion than yours?

  • Would you (and your family) accept to bring up, educate and keep the children in that religion - church, you and your spouse selected for them from birth untill their Legal age?

  • What do you know about the traditions - rituals of "Death, the Dead, Wake, Funeral, Burial & Mourning, Beliefs, Rituals & Customs - Etc." in both the Philippines folklore - culture and the comming "new" country - culture - religion?

Thoughts for both of you about Divorce:

  • If the situation will happen and a marriage don´t work because of ???? so it´s very difficult to get a divorce valid in the Philippines for a filipino citizen, even she - he has got a divorce valid in another country READ HERE

  • If you are a NON-Muslim NEVER - NEVER date a Muslim

  • IMPORTANT - For a non-Muslim it´s very important to read and hear from other about their experience bad - good in a NON-Muslim - MUSLIM marriage for both them and children, and get accept from own family of such a marriage, before he - she accept dating - marriage. - How will your families and local communities react?  Read more HERE and think many times before... if you are a Non-Muslim - Read also HERE and look video HERE THINK - THINK and THINK!

Polygamy involves sexual activity with mutiple partners without or with marriage. When a man is married to more than one wife at a time, it is called polygyny. When a woman is married to more than one husband at a time, it is called polyandry.

In the Philippines polygamy is only legal for Muslims.

Polyandry can never happen in the Philippines, although there are reported cases in the barangays where a brother has a secret affair with his sister in-law or a sister with his brother in-law. This is absolutely not allowed in the Philippines infact it is a crime and worst some Filipino families indulge in a more serious crime of incestuous affair.

Weddings in The Philippines

The Philippines has fabulous customs, especially when it comes to weddings, using a mix of earlier Filipino traditions and later Latin customs introduced by their colonial masters. The weddings reflect the strong traditions of family - and extended family. Therefore Filipino wedding ceremonies typically involve many people and the wedding rituals 'speak' to the couple personally.
