Filipino chanteuse, Regine Velasquez takes time off her busy schedule to examine
the issues surrounding "children in need of special protection", a term used by
UNICEF to cover all those children in difficult circumstances. They are the
abandoned children who need love and shelter. They are the abused children in
need of protection from abuse and violence at home. They are the street children
- living and/or working on the streets. They are the working little ones who
risk life and limb in hazardous work environments. To explore the issues in
depth, Regine visited the community in Payatas, one of the biggest garbage dumps
in Manila and joined the street educators on the streets of Manila.

Online sexual abuse, exploitation of children is a ‘silent’ pandemic

A “silent pandemic” is currently affecting children – one that is probably more
devastating and harmful than the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Child rights group Save the Children Philippines on Tuesday, Feb. 9, has raised
concern that more children are at risk from online sexual abuse and
exploitation amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This as families resort to easy
money due to deepening poverty while children are still not allowed to leave
homes.

The Philippines has 1.8 million abandoned children. Here's
what keeps many from adoption
Jonathan Kaiman - Sunshine de Leon May 28, 2016
The Philippines has an abandoned children problem. About 1.8 million children in
the country, more than 1% of its entire population, are "abandoned or
neglected," according to the United Nations' Children's Rights & Emergency
Relief Organization.
Some are victims of extreme poverty; others of natural
disasters and armed conflicts in the country's riven south, or the sex workers’
children, conceived by foreign travellers.
Philippine’s fatherless kids of Angeles City Streetwalkers
Angeles City in the Philippines is a well-known sex tourism destination. There
used to be an American air base here, but now it’s popular among mainly retired
men who travel in search of sex for sale. Hundreds of local young women work in
the bars and night clubs offering additional services for the money they
desperately need to make ends meet and feed their families. The real victims
though are the sex workers’ children, conceived by foreign travellers.
These children immediately stand out in the crowd, being of mixed-race here
almost certainly means a child is the product of a liaison between a sex tourist
and a call girl. They may stand out but they’re not unusual, within their
communities there are many children of the sex trade.

rehabilitation process formally begins with the help of our social workers,

Feb 17, 2021 CNN Philippines

AC Nicholls tells us in the second part of her special report.
This is a public service announcement -
Feb 23, 2015 - from DSWD - Department of Social Welfare and
Development - Philippines:
Ever thought of adoption?
The government is hoping more
potential parents will consider the option of legally adopting children who are
in the care of private and public orphanages across the country.
There are 3 kinds of adoption in the
Philippines:
•Agency adoptions: A licensed adoption agency identifies and develops adoptive
families for children who are voluntarily or involuntarily committed. This is
managed either by DSWD or licensed NGOs or child-placing agencies like the
Kaisahang Buhay Foundation.
•Family or relative adoptions: The biological parents make a direct placement of
the child to a relative.
•Private or independent adoptions: Can be a direct placement to a family known
by the child’s biological parents or through someone who arranges family
placements.
The DSWD, however, warns of "black
markets" or illegal procedures wherein children are given up for adoption in
exchange for cash or other means of profit.
