What is Trinity Sunday?
Everything you should know about the first Sunday after Pentecost.

Trinity Sunday, officially called "The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity," is one of the few celebrations of the Christian Year that commemorates a reality and doctrine rather than a person or event. On Trinity Sunday, Christians remember and honor the eternal God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Trinity Sunday is celebrated the Sunday after Pentecost, and lasts only one day, which is symbolic of the unity of the Trinity.

Roman Catholic devotions

are "external practices of piety" which are not part of the official liturgy of the Catholic Church but are part of the popular spiritual practices of Catholics. Catholic devotions do not become part of liturgical worship, even if they are performed within a Catholic church, in a group, in the presence of a priest.

The Two Swords of the Church
These two types of authority by the Church are symbolically represented by the two swords of the Gospel: “So they said, ‘Lord, behold, there are two swords here.’ But he said to them, ‘It is sufficient.’ ” Lk 22:38. The Church has the authority to teach doctrine, on matters of faith, morals, and salvation. But the Church also has temporal authority, so that She can make practical decisions, discipline needed to function as a Church within the world, as a Church whose members on earth are sinners.

(also spelled Candlemass), also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord Jesus and the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a Christian Holy Day commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple.
Many Christians (especially Roman Catholics Anglicans, Methodists, Lutherans, and Orthodox) also bring their candles to their local church, where they are blessed and then used for the rest of the year; for Christians, these blessed candles serve as a symbol of Jesus Christ, who referred to himself as the Light of the World.

From St. Peter's Basilica, Holy Mass for Consecrated persons marking the XXIII World Day for Consecrated Life

an act by which a person or a thing is separated from secular or profane use and dedicated permanently to the sacred by prayers, rites, and ceremonies.
Within the Roman Catholic Church, the act of consecration typically can be applied to a bishop, a fixed altar, an altar stone, a church, and a chalice and paten. The ordinary minister of a consecration is a bishop, while the ordinary minister of a blessing is a priest. At a consecration, holy oils are normally used; at blessings, customarily holy water.

ANGELUS (Orasyon in Tagalog)

The Angelus, latin for angel, is a devotion in memory of the Incarnation

The devotion was traditionally recited in Roman Catholic churches, convents, and monasteries three times daily: 6:00 am, noon, and 6:00 pm, many churches still follow the devotion, and some practice it at home. The Angelus is usually accompanied by the ringing of the Angelus bell, which is a call to prayer and to spread good-will to everyone on Earth

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle and other priests baptized 400 children from the slums of Manila on Saturday, January 14, as part of a Catholic foundation's programs for the poor.
He also reminded godparents that their duty is not to give gifts, but to help parents in raising their children.
Organizers said they want to dispel the notion that Catholics need to pay for the sacraments – which, they said, keeps the poor away from baptism.

Christian hymns are often written with special or seasonal themes and these are used on holy days such as Christmas, Easter and the Feast of All Saints, or during particular seasons such as Advent and Lent. Others are used to instill reverence to the Holy Bible or to celebrate Christian practices such as the eucharist or baptism. Some hymns praise or address individual saints, particularly the Blessed Virgin Mary; such hymns are particularly prevalent in Catholicism.

Hindi Kita Malilimutan - Song for the dead

Every year, Filipinos gather with their families to pay respect to their departed loved ones. As with the other stages of life, death is traditionally commemorated through customs and rituals that usually involve music. In recent times, popular love songs are being sung or played during funerals as people say goodbye to their departed. Perhaps the most popular is Hindi Kita Malilimutan popularized by Basil Valdez and composed by Manoling Francisco, SJ in 1979, with lyrics based on the Book of Isaiah from the Old Testament.

This study concern itself with what happens from the moment of death until forty days after.

Pasiyam and forty days of prayer for the dead

The traditions to offer novena prayers at the home of the departed that ends with a simple meal. Both of them are reckoned from the day of the death of the loved one though some places people set it from the day of the first mass said for the soul of the dearly departed. The "ritual" simply consists of regular formulaic prayer, novena for the dead and several litanies that can be recited from memory by the "prayer warriors" probably due to almost everyday usage.

On the cemetery's entrance it is written: "I do not know the dignity of his birth, but I do know the glory of his death."
The Republic Memorial Cemetery at Fort McKinley was established in May 1947 as a fitting tribute to the gallant Filipino men and women who brought honor to the country and fought for the sake of freedom and democracy. The Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery, Laguna

It is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday between 8 am-4 pm.

It is the only one of its kind in the Philippines - it is a burial site located inside, or more accurately, beneath a church. This church is rich in history - it was built and designed for funeral mass in 1845 by the Franciscan priest Fr. Vicente Velloc. He also directed the construction of an underground graveyard 15 feet below the church.

The Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery is considered a national historical landmark because its underground crypt was used as a secret meeting place in 1896 by Filipino revolutionaries or Katipuneros, members of the KKK. During the Filipino-American War, Filipino patriots also used the underground cemetery to formulate their battle plans and to seek shelter. It also became a safehouse for Filipino guerillas during World War II.

with Basilica Del Santo Niño Library
Heeding the wise advice of St. Augustine of Hippo that in every house there should be a library (Possidius 31, 6,8), the Augustinian Friars of the Basilica put up a library in one of the corners of the convent. We don’t exactly know when this library was put up, but it is safe to surmise that it was established when the convent was constructed and completed in 1764.

“Hubo” Ritual at the end of the Sinulog Festival

A few days after the feast of the Sto. Niño de Cebu every Third Sunday of January, the so-called “Hubo” (a Cebuano term meaning “naked”) ritual takes place during the early morning celebration of the Holy Mass, marking the end of the Sinulog Festival in Cebu. Seen from the outside, it appears as a simple rite of undressing, bathing and redressing the image of the Holy Child. The icon is stripped of its elaborate festive garments, washed, and dressed with a simpler garb.

The Black Nazarene and Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene

go to overview

The Black Nazarene

known to devotees in Spanish as Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno (Filipino: Mahal na Itim na Nazareno, English: Our Father Jesus Nazarene) is a life-sized, dark wooden sculpture of Jesus Christ carrying a cross, believed to be miraculous by many Filipino Catholics.

Originally with fair complexion, it turned dark after it survived a burning ship on its arrival from Mexico. The image is currently in the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo district, Manila, Philippines, where it is venerated weekly with Friday Novena Masses. There are also three annual processions associated with this icon, most notably on January 9, celebrating its transfer (Spanish: Translación) and enshrinement in the present Basilica, and is attended by several million devotees.

Ina Poon Bato

Brief history and devotion and hymn

Our Lady of Ina Poonbato (Botolan, Zambala, Philippines) became popular after the explosion of Mt. Pinatubo in June 1991 when it was half buried in lava.  The image of Ina Poonbato is said to be of miraculous character. The statue was found by the Aeta chief Djadig over four hundred years ago.  He brought the beautiful lady carved in shining wood to this home.  His wife threw the statue without recognizing its meaning into the fire.  The fire burned the house down but left the statue unscathed.  It soon became an object of veneration among the Aetas.  The first missionaries to the Zambalas region (1608, Recoletos) recognized the statue as that of Our Lady and transferred it to their church.

La Virgen Milagrosa

Badoc, Ilocos Norte houses the Sanctuary of the Miraculous Statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the La Virgen Milagrosa. History traces the life-sized statue to Nagasaki, Japan. It was sent floating in the sea by missionaries operating in secret in Japan (for fear of persecution during the Tokugawa Regime), along with the Miraculous Statue of the Black Nazarene (Sinait's Santo Cristo Milagroso). It was first found by local fishermen in the shores of Barangay Dadalaquiten, on the boundary between Sinait and Badoc, in the year 1620. Only fishermen from Sinait were able to move the Statue of the Black Nazarene. The fishermen from Badoc, unable to move the Black Nazarene, were able to move the La Virgen Milagrosa that came with it - which was, in turn, unable to be moved by the fishermen from Sinait. They took the statues to their respective towns, hence becoming their patron saints. Today The La Virgen Milagrosa is enshrined at the Badoc Church.

Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de Turumba ("Our Lady of Sorrows of Turumba")

is the name for a specific statue of the Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Sorrows, enshrined in Pakil, Laguna.

The image, according to tradition, belonged to some missionaries who crossed Laguna de Bay in a launch. When the launch was shipwrecked, some of its relics were washed ashore including the image of the Virgin. One Friday morning, some fishermen found the image in the nets. Believing it was a religious image, they decided to drop it off at a parish church. When they started to carry the painting, they found that it was heavy. They tried to carry it in many directions, until it was near the church of Pakil. While they headed that way, the wind and current aided their course; and when they landed, they left the image on a rock so they could continue their fishing duties.

A group of women found the image one Sunday morning. Although it had rained during the night, the canvas was dry. When they tried to take it away, they could not move it; even the strongest among them, Mariangga, could not lift it. They quickly told the parish priest, who in turn called the sacristans, choir members and churchgoers to get the image. As they lifted the image, the people around begun to sing and dance. To their surprise, the image gave way. And So the Turumba to Our Lady was born.

is a traditional Christian saint of the 2nd century. She is sometimes called Potentiana and is often coupled with her sister, Praxedes the martyr. According to her acta, by the Bollandists (dating from the 8th century) and the Martyrology of Reichenau, she was a Roman virgin of the early Christian church, daughter of Saint Pudens, friend of the Apostles, and sister of Praxedes.

The Spanish Conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi, the founder of the city of Manila, gained possession of the territory in 1571 on 19 May, the feast of Pudentiana (in Spanish "Potenciana"), and declared her patron saint of what is now the Philippines.
