What Francis
might mean by ‘Fratelli Tutti’
Carmen M. Nanko-Fernández, 3 October 2020
If you want to understand Pope Francis, it helps to know tango, soccer lingo,
and colloquial Argentinian Spanish. Making sense of Francis, I propose, also
requires an ability to think in hyperlinks.
In other words, what he says opens paths to multiple references that further
enrich and expand possibilities for interpretation. Francis plays with language
and space.
This is clear from the fact that his first trip outside of Rome was to
Lampedusa, and most recently, in the title of his forthcoming encyclical,
Fratelli tutti, to be signed in Assisi at the tomb of St. Francis.

An encyclical for all brothers and sisters
Andrea Tornielli 16 September 2020
While waiting to know the contents of the document, there has been some
discussion about the title and how to translate it inclusively. An encyclical,
though, is per se a universal text, and Pope Francis truly wants to speak to the
heart of each and every person. The Holy See Press Office announces that the
text will be published on 4 October.
Whatever it is, title of new papal encyclical not ‘anti-feminist’

has said the choice of the title has little to do with sensitivities but is the
result of standard Vatican protocol. |

Lectio Divina
In Roman Catholicism, Lutheranism, or Anglicanism Lectio Divina (Latin for
"Divine Reading") is a traditional monastic practice of scriptural reading,
meditation and prayer intended to promote communion with God and to increase the
knowledge of God's word. In the view of one commentator, it does not treat
scripture as texts to be studied, but as the living word.
Traditionally, Lectio Divina has four separate steps: read; meditate; pray;
contemplate. First a passage of scripture is read, then its meaning is reflected
upon. This is followed by prayer and contemplation on the Word of God

Candlemas
(also spelled Candlemass), also known as the Feast of the
Presentation of Our Lord Jesus and the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed
Virgin Mary, is a Christian Holy Day commemorating the presentation of Jesus at
the Temple.
Many Christians (especially Roman Catholics Anglicans, Methodists, Lutherans,
and Orthodox) also bring their candles to their local church, where they are
blessed and then used for the rest of the year; for Christians, these blessed
candles serve as a symbol of Jesus Christ, who referred to himself as the Light
of the World.

World Day for Consecrated Life
Consecration
an act by which a person or a thing is separated from secular or profane use and
dedicated permanently to the sacred by prayers, rites, and ceremonies.
Within the Roman Catholic Church, the act of consecration typically can be
applied to a bishop, a fixed altar, an altar stone, a church, and a chalice and
paten. The ordinary minister of a consecration is a bishop, while the ordinary
minister of a blessing is a priest. At a consecration, holy oils are normally
used; at blessings, customarily holy water. |

Liturgy of the Hours - Divine Office - Canonical hours
Liturgy of the Hours (Latin: Liturgia Horarum) or Divine
Office (Latin: Officium Divinum) or canonical hours, often referred to as the
Breviary, is the official set of daily prayers prescribed by the Catholic Church
to be recited by clergy, religious institutes, and the laity. It consists
primarily of Psalms supplemented by hymns, readings and other prayers. Together
with the Mass, it constitutes the official public prayer life of the Church.

ANGELUS (Orasyon in Tagalog)
The Angelus, latin for angel, is a devotion in memory
of the Incarnation
The devotion was traditionally recited in Roman
Catholic churches, convents, and monasteries three times daily: 6:00 am,
noon, and 6:00 pm, many churches still follow the devotion, and some
practice it at home. The Angelus is usually accompanied by the ringing
of the Angelus bell, which is a call to prayer and to spread good-will
to everyone on Earth Look also

What is the Holy Eucharist?
The Holy Eucharist is a sacrament and a sacrifice. In the Holy Eucharist, under
the appearances of bread and wine, the Lord Christ is contained, offered, and
received.
The Eucharist also known as Holy Communion and the Lord's Supper among other
names is a Christian rite that is considered a sacrament in most churches, and
as an ordinance in others. According to the New Testament, the rite was
instituted by Jesus Christ during the Last Supper; giving his disciples bread
and wine during a Passover meal, Jesus commanded his disciples to "do this in
memory of me" while referring to the bread as "my body" and the cup of wine as
"the new covenant in my blood". |

The English language translation of Circular letter to Bishops on the bread and
wine for the Eucharist
July 08, 2017
The bread used in the celebration of the Most
Holy Eucharistic Sacrifice must be
unleavened, purely of wheat, and recently made so that there is no danger of
decomposition.
The wine that is used in the most sacred celebration of the Eucharistic
Sacrifice must be natural, from the fruit of the grape, pure and incorrupt, not
mixed with other substances. |
 |
A tabernacle
is a fixed, locked box in which, in some Christian churches,
the Eucharist is "reserved" (stored). A less obvious container for the same
purpose, set into a wall, is called an aumbry.
Within Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy and in some congregations of Anglicanism
and Lutheranism, a tabernacle is a box-like vessel for the exclusive reservation
of the consecrated Eucharist. It is normally made of metal, stone or wood, is
lockable and secured to its altar or adjacent wall to prevent the consecrated
elements within from being removed without authorization. |

Indulgence
In the teaching of the Catholic Church, an indulgence (Latin: indulgentia, from
indulgeo, 'permit') is "a way to reduce the amount of punishment one has to
undergo for sins".[1] The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes an
indulgence as "a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins
whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly
disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the
Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with
authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and all of the saints"

Priest reminds parents: No superhero costumes on your child’s Christening
February 28, 2021 Leslie Ann AquinoHow should parents dress up their children
who are to be baptized? Definitely not in superhero costumes.
Parents should garb their children in white and not in costumes, said Fr.
Reginald Malicdem, rector of the Manila Cathedral, recalling instances where
babies who were to be baptized wore costumes like Superman, Batman, Spiderman or
that of a dinosaur.
“The baptismal garment is white because this is a sign of our Christian
dignity,” he said in his homily during a Mass on Sunday, February 28. |

Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle and other priests baptized 400 children
from the slums of Manila on Saturday, January 14, as part of a Catholic
foundation's programs for the poor.
He also reminded godparents that their duty is not to give gifts, but to help
parents in raising their children.
Organizers said they want to dispel the notion that Catholics need to pay for
the sacraments – which, they said, keeps the poor away from baptism. |

Hindi Kita Malilimutan - Song for the dead
Every year, Filipinos gather with their families to
pay respect to their departed loved ones. As with the other stages of
life, death is traditionally commemorated through customs and rituals
that usually involve music. In recent times, popular love songs are
being sung or played during funerals as people say goodbye to their
departed. Perhaps the most popular is Hindi Kita Malilimutan popularized
by Basil Valdez and composed by Manoling Francisco, SJ in 1979, with
lyrics based on the Book of Isaiah from the Old Testament.

Death Day

Bataan bishop scraps fees for funeral Masses
Paterno Esmaquel II March 13, 2019
Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos ordered the scrapping of fees for funeral Masses
in his diocese, which covers Bataan province, to ease the burden of families and
friends of the deceased.
This is the latest in a growing trend in the Philippine Catholic Church to scrap
the arancel system, or the practice of imposing taxes on 'free' church services. |

minus a few torments and degrees Fahrenheit; it's not Heaven minus joy.
It's not a "Third Final Destination" of souls. Purgatory is simply the
place where already saved souls are cleansed of the temporal effects of
sin before they are allowed to see the holy face of Almighty God.
Revelation 21:27 tells us that "...nothing unclean will enter Heaven."

Pasiyam and forty days of prayer for the dead
The traditions to offer novena prayers at the home of the
departed that ends with a simple meal. Both of them are reckoned from the day of
the death of the loved one though some places people set it from the day of the
first mass said for the soul of the dearly departed. The "ritual" simply
consists of regular formulaic prayer, novena for the dead and several litanies
that can be recited from memory by the "prayer warriors" probably due to almost
everyday usage.

Filipino Funeral Traditions

Filipinos and Funeral Traditions
Funeral practices and burial customs in the Philippines encompass
a wide range of personal, cultural, and traditional beliefs and practices
which Filipinos observe in relation to bereavement, dying, honoring, respecting,
interring, and remembering their departed loved ones, relatives, and friends.
Sources of the various practices include religious teachings, vestiges of
colonialism, and regional variations on these.

The cost of dying in the Philippines: Can you afford it?
Ralf Rivas November 01, 2019
While death is said to be the great equalizer, the divide between the rich and
the poor is still evident in how they are sent off.
Living is expensive. Departing is pricey, too.
While death absolves one of debt and all other financial obligations, loved ones
carry the burden of the cost of burial and other services on top of grief. |

The cost of dying in Duterte's war on drugs
President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs has left thousands of casualties in its

POLICE AND FUNERAL PARLORS - Part 2 OF 2
The business of picking up the dead
Funeral homes that wish to extend services in cases that involve killings need

Oct 31, 2016 Ashes of the dead after
cremation should not be scattered or kept at homes to avoid desecration of human
remains and should still be buried because of the Catholic church's belief in

virus-hit PH
May 3, 2020 Manila Bulletin Online
Families of coronavirus (COVID-19) victims in the Philippines are being denied
traditional death rites in favour of hurried, impersonal cremations, with virus
restrictions often meaning they are forbidden a last look at their loved ones.
It is a painful and disorienting process for both the families and crematory
workers that has upended the Philippines’ intimate rituals of laying the dead to

when modern cremation services were introduced into the country, there
came another practical option.

The 7 Archangels and Their Meanings
Dawn Demers
Angels are interwoven within the culture of man. Regardless of religion or
belief system, stories of angels are a part of our heritage, of the fabric that
makes up human history.
Religious texts refer to an archangel as being at a high level in the celestial
hierarchy. While the exact number of archangels is unknown many traditions and
faiths reference seven archangels.
