“We have to stop projects that destroy our biodiversity and weaken our climate resilience. For many years, environment advocates have been arguing the dirty and harmful impact of development aggression projects such as large-scale corporate mining and reclamation,” they said.

Remembering the Marcopper mine disaster
Apr 13, 2016

Victims recount their stories twenty years after the last major disaster involving Marcopper mines in Marinduque.

The Marcopper Mining Disaster occurred on March 24, 1996, on the Philippine island of Marinduque, a province of the Philippines located in the Mimaropa region. It remains one of the largest mining disasters in Philippine history. A fracture in the drainage tunnel of a large pit containing leftover mine tailings led to a discharge of toxic mine waste into the Makulapnit-Boac river system and caused flash floods in areas along the river. One village, Barangay Hinapulan, was buried in six feet of muddy floodwater, causing the displacement of 400 families. Twenty other villages had to be evacuated. Drinking water was contaminated killing fish and freshwater shrimp. Large animals such as cows, pigs and sheep were overcome and killed. The flooding caused the destruction of crops and irrigation channels. Following the disaster, the Boac River was declared unusable.

(and a little Flora) Wild habitats are fast disappearing. Forests are being cut down, rivers and seas polluted, heathlands built on, hedgerows pulled up, ponds filled in - the destruction seems endless. As the habitats decrease, so do their communities of animals and plants. Habitat destruction is one of the main reasons why many species face extinction. Habitats are commonly split up and animals can't get from one part to another, unless wildlife 'corridors' are provided. Other reasons for their demise include the hunting of animals and collection of plants. Now they are facing a new threat, that of climate change.

Endangered Species in Flora

(and a little Fauna) Wild habitats are fast disappearing.

Guyabano, The Soursop Fruit

has cancer curing abilities. The Sour Sop or the fruit from the graviola tree is a miraculous natural cancer cell killer 10,000 times stronger than Chemo. The taste is not bad after all. It’s completely natural and definitely has no side effects.

Guyabano is a tree called graviola, guanabana in Spanish and has the uninspiring name “soursop” in English.

The Soursop or Guyabano green berry was spread by humans into all tropical zones on this globe. The fruit with white yellow flesh grows just on smaller trees and can be found on the almost marked.

The fruit is very large and the subacid sweet white pulp is eaten out of hand or, more commonly, used to make fruit drinks, sherbets and such.

Preserving the tradition of heirloom rice in the Cordilleras

Jodesz Gavilan Posted on 10/04/2014

Heirloom rice varieties go beyond the usual type of rice we see on our dinner tables. They represent the culture of the Cordilleras and have become the lifeblood of their farming tradition.
According to the International Rice Research Institute, IRRI, heirloom rice varieties are more flavorful, aromatic, and have exceptional nutritional value when cooked.
The heirloom rice varieties, the product of the terraces, are considered to be an important fixture in the lives of farmers in several areas in CAR.
Staying true to the name, these varieties of rice are passed from generation to generation and are grown by families in their small ancestral lands.

There are many reasons why Filipino farmers should plant cassava - locally known as kamoteng kahoy or balinghoy, cassava, scientific name: Manihot escidenta. Cassava ranks second only to sweet potato in hectarage among root crops produced in the country. It is mainly grown for its tubers which are a rich source of carbohydrates. Unknowingly, it is a good source of calcium and ascorbic acid.

REGARDED as a super food that heals, kamoteng kahoy, cassava has multifarious uses besides being a food substitute for rice and corn. This Philippine root crop, can also be a potential source of raw materials for industrial uses and food delicacies.

Since January 2007, the organic farming of the Purok-Gimong or Basic Ecceslical Communities of Sinait, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, has initiated the farmers into the liberating way of farming, producing their own organic farm inputs, and thus promoting ecological balance, organic farm produce for healthy consumption, and more agricultural profits for the tillers of the soil. The continuing consciousness formation and training among farmers have been facilitated with the holding of Taripnong Mannalon quarterly sponsored by the Purok Gimong.
