Failon Ngayon tackles the issue with fraud health insurance providers and how the Insurance Commission is addressing it.

The CCT program
'Conditional cash transfers (CCT) are a stepping stone to universal health coverage, not just help for individual families'. CCT program gives cash transfers to poor families, provided, among other things, that pregnant household members seek antenatal care and a health professional delivers the baby. It requires that children aged 5 years and younger are immunized and monitored in case of malnutrition, and that children aged 6 to 14 are dewormed twice a year. More than just granting cash, the program intends to break the vicious intergenerational nature of poverty.

Jessica Soho visited a poor community called 'Isla Maliit' and 'Isla Malaki' located near Manila Bay. Here, she discovered that most of the residents, because of poverty, sell their kidneys for a living.

Filipino poor sell kidneys to survive

The Philippines is listed by the World Health Organisation as an organ trafficking "hotspot". Thousands of poor Filipinos living in slums or rural areas have given up a kidney in exchange for a few thousand dollars.

The IRR categorically prohibits the buying and selling of human organs. Violators face up to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of up to P2 million

Philippine's ailing healthcare

The World Health Organisation (Who) says the Philippine government needs to step up support for public healthcare as more slums spring up in the capital Manila.
