Agusan Marsh of Agusan Del Sur

one of the most ecologically significant wetlands in the Philippines. Found in the heart of Mindanao's Agusan Basin, this vast expanse of marsh covers an area roughly the size of Metro Manila. It contains nearly 15% of the nation's fresh water resources in the form of swamp forests.

The tiny community of mostly ethnic Manobos have made their permanent homes deep within the marsh, living on floating homes. The small houses made of bamboo and nipa lashed to hard wood logs, freely rise or fall with the level of the marsh itself. The marsh provides virtually everything the Manobos need.

Kaliwa and Chico Dams: More than just debt of money

The Chico River loan agreement may prove to be a template for future loan agreements that the Philippines enters into, effectively compromising our patrimonial assets.
Because these two projects are bad from an environmental and social justice point of view, likely resulting in an intensified insurgency in the Sierra Madre and Cordillera, they are likely not to be built and the probability is that future administrations will have to cancel these loans. These, in turn, will result in defaulting on the loans and in arbitration proceedings that have been designed to favor China.

The historic town of Pantabangan in Nueva Ecija was abandoned in the 1970s when floodwater from the newly created dam submerged the town and its environs.
Residents were forced to relocate on higher ground, but many pieces of heritage were lost to the rising waters. Among them, an 18th-century church whose belfry stood out above the water like the outstretched arm of a drowning relic.
Augustinian missionaries started to propagate the seed of Catholicism in Nueva Ecija then collectively part of Pampanga as early as 17th century in the pueblos of Gapang (Gapan), Santor (Bongabon), Puncan (Carranglan), Pantabangan, Aliaga and Cuyapo,” wrote Baniaga in his Facebook post, describing the history of the church’s ruins.
