'Kawag-kawag'
Dokumentaryo ni Mariz Umali June 1, 2019

In Navotas, the lives of most residents are bound by the sea.
Every day at 5 am, thirteen-year-old Reymark sails on a makeshift raft called “kawag-kawag”. The raft, made from sheets of styrofoam, is unsafe especially on rough seas. Reymark almost lost his life once when his kawag-kawag capsized.
Using small pieces of plywood, Reymark paddles a distance of more than a kilometer towards big fishing vessels they call “pangulong.” He helps clean and pull fish nets for an average of four hours. As payment, Reymark gets to collect leftover fish that got stuck in fishing nets. But he only gets to bring home half while the other half, he gives to the “kawag-kawag” owner.
The hard work Reymark endures every day is all for lola Remedios. His parents left him right after he was born. Since then, it was Reymark’s grandmother who looked after him. To repay his lola's love, Reymark works to provide for their daily needs.
A story of a boy's immeasurable love for her lola.

The burden of gold

Child labour in small-scale mines and quarries

CUMAOS, For as long as Aiza can remember, her day began earlier than most as she, her sister, and their mother worked to eke out a meagre living at the gold mines in Cumaos. Aiza learned the practice from her mother, and now her six year old sister is learning from her. When her mother fell ill last year, Aiza had to quit school and work full time to support the family and pay for her mother's medical bills. She is just one of almost 18,000 children who work in the small-scale mining and quarrying sector in the Philippines.

Int'l group slams PH gov't failure to stop child labor in mines
Buena Bernal Updated October 01, 2015

While the Philippine benefits from small-scale mining in the provinces, HRW says the industry must be rid of any and all elements that force children to live adult lives.
HRW found that both underground mines and underwater or compressor mines put the children at risk of injuries from mine collapse and drowning, respectively.
In compressor mining, some adolescent boys are made to stay underwater for several hours at a time in 10-meter-deep shafts.

Child Soldiers hired by BIFF-MILF

The Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters BIFF - a splinter group of the Muslim separatist Moro Islamic Liberation or MILF - was recently filmed here, in a video submitted to Children of War. Shot in their base in Mindanao, this video is alarming because of the vision of child soldiers, some look as young as 10 years old, carrying AK47s, armalite rifles. We are calling on the government, child advocacy groups, and the Filipinos to condemn BIFF in using child soldiers. Let everybody pressure Umbra Kato's group into demobilizing these innocent kids!
